About Us

We have been breeding alpacas at Bearhouse Farm since 2004 and in 2011 won the 'Best Small Breeder' Award at the Devon County Show. You can visit our Facebook page:  Bearhouse Alpacas or follow us on Twitter: @BearhouseA.

We are to be found in the beautiful Roncombe Valley, East Devon, where we specialise in Huacaya alpacas, although we have recently acquired some suris (they have long, straight, silky lustrous locks) and plan to start breeding in 2014.  We breed our alpacas with award winning stud animals to maintain and improve the conformation and fleece quality of our cria.  In 2013 we have bred our first appaloosa alpaca.

We currently have in excess of sixty mainly huacaya alpacas (but we also have some suris) from which we offer top quality breeding stock as well as pets in a range of colours and to suit all budgets.  From our stock we can offer maidens and pregnant females, some with cria at foot.  We also supply stud services and have potential stud animals for sale as well as whethers (castrated males) which will make friendly quality pets and field guards, many of which have been halter trained.

Animal welfare is of paramount importance at Bearhouse Farm and we are pleased to offer help and advice to our customers, as well as agistment services, if you would prefer to keep your alpacas here.

We sell raw fibre for spinning and felting in three different Grades (Baby Alpaca, Grade A and Grade B) from whites through to fawns, browns and blacks. The majority of our alpaca fibre is spun into high quality Alpaca wool in double knit and 4 PLY and in beautiful natural colours.  Most of our wool is worsted spun and sold as 50gm balls, although we do have some 100gm skeins and some colours are woollen spun.

Testimonial From Wool Customer - January 2014

Hello
I subscribe to this magazine and they recently had a pattern for knitting a fairisle cushion. I decided to give it go and use your lovely wool. I've just sent this photo to the magazine as I'm enjoying the project so much. I've also told them all about your wool as I think it is the softest and most beautiful ever. Maybe they'll get in touch with you.
Thanks for your part in my brilliant winter project.
kind regards,
Carol Hall
Gittisham, near Honiton.

We've used a local mill to produce pure alpaca felt sheets (3 ft x 4 ft) available in white, brown and fawn and sell felt related products  - boot liners and felt collage kits, on our website shop or at The Spar Shop, Honiton Garage, Honiton, Devon EX14 1BQ.

Alpaca manure/compost is also for sale at The Spar Shop.  Please telephone if you would like to order in bulk as we can organise local deliveries!  Alpacas are browsing animals and generally eat grass and hay although they will also eat brambles and nibble at fruit trees. Maybe because of this diet and the fact that alpacas have an amazingly efficient digestive system, alpaca manure is very rich in nutrients and makes a wonderful fertilizer for the whole garden. Their poo doesn't require composting, does not smell and does not hurt your plants even when you apply it straight from the alpaca. There is no need to compost before spreading on your garden.

Please contact us if you would like to come and visit our farm to see these fascinating animals.
